How to Disinfect a Car Interior Against COVID-19

It’s an obvious fact that we’ve all experienced some challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic. We had to change an enormous part of our lives, attempting to prevent the virus from spreading in our community. However, many of us rely on our cars for mobility, which means it’s only normal to ask ourselves about the risk of contamination inside a vehicle.

Disinfecting the interior of the car is an excellent idea — especially if you spend a lot of time inside your vehicle. The key aim should be to ensure a germ-free environment for you and your loved ones, all while taking measures to protect your car and its various surfaces/materials. Keep on reading to find out how to sanitize car interior surfaces effectively.

Why is it important to disinfect your car?

The regular disinfection of your car will help you keep the risk of COVID-19 down to a minimum. Most of us are currently practicing social distancing, but we still rely on our vehicles to get around. And as experts have proven, the virus can survive on various surfaces — including inside a car.

While rare, it isn’t impossible that the virus could travel from your hands to frequent touch points such as the steering wheel, gear shifter or the handles on car doors. As a precaution, all touched areas inside a vehicle should be cleaned and disinfected after every use. And if an infected individual has traveled inside a vehicle, immediate sanitation is a must.

Key spots to disinfect

As mentioned above, sanitization should be concentrated on high-touch surfaces. Aside from the steering wheel and gear shifter, consider not only knobs and buttons, but any switch you touch frequently. Disinfect the handles, pedals, car keys, and seats. Occasionally, you should also clean low-contact areas such as the windows and headrests.

If you are wondering how to clean mould and mildew from the car interior, we recommend first looking at the source of the problem. In many situations, it is enough to disinfect the HVAC unit.

You might also want to clean the AC vents and the cabin filter. Last, but not least, wash carpets and floor mats and use a vacuum to clean the inside of the cabin.

Products you should use — and products you shouldn’t

The best cleaning agent, with disinfecting properties, is isopropyl alcohol. This can disinfect the car interior surfaces without damage, as well as kill both bacteria and viruses. You can rely on it to remove stubborn stains and improve the appearance of your car.

For hard surfaces, we suggest using a microfibre cloth, which will trap the dirt particles but will not cause any visible scratches. The alcohol-based solution should have a concentration of 70% or higher. You can use it to disinfect door handles, the steering wheel and the dashboard. You can also use it for armrests and seat adjusters.

Clean the seats gently, preferably with a mixture of soap and water. One should never use bleach or hydrogen peroxide, as these substances can damage the upholstery — especially the one made from leather. Now, you have your answer to the question: “what can I clean the car interior with?”

General COVID-19 Best Practices

There are many additional measures we can take to protect ourselves against COVID-19. The key is to make sure we stay safe and healthy, all while stopping the viral chain from continuing.

Simple measures we can take include:

·   Respecting the recommended social distancing measures (six-feet rule)

·   Washing our hands after driving

·   Staying at home if we feel ill

·   Avoiding large groups of people, especially with unknown contacts

·   Sharing a car with people we don’t know
