Car Care Tips: 5 Ways to Remove Pet Hair

Travelling with a pet can be a lot of fun. Seeing your furry friend jumping around in the car, excited to go for a drive, is sure to put a smile on your face. But there is a downside to taking your dog on a car ride – the hair they leave behind.

If you’ve ever travelled with a dog before, you know the difficulty in getting rid of pet hair from the upholstery of the car. It isn’t as simple as brushing it off. The hair clings to the seat and upholstery while also making its way to the nooks and crannies of the car.

We understand the inconvenience that pet hair causes and have car cleaning tips from vacuuming to using a balloon to get rid of it.

Vacuum

A car vacuum cleanerworks wonders when it comes to pet hair removal. Many models come with different tips that are designed specifically for soft surfaces and hard-to-reach places. So, it can easily suck up pet hair along with other junk from the seats and the nooks and crannies of your car. Just power the vacuum on and let it work its magic.

Velcro Curlers

Velcro hair curlers work to attract pet hair from the surfaces in the car and onto the curlers’ tiny hooks and loops. All you have to do is roll the curlers over the seat upholstery and floor mats of the car.

You may have a harder time getting to the hair in the nooks and crannies of your car with a curler, but it isn’t impossible – you just need to maneuver and bend the curler so you can roll it in tighter spaces. We recommend you designate a few curlers for such spaces.

Squeegee

Using a squeegee is helpful as it collects pet hair in one area. Think of the thin rubber blade as a rake for your car. Once you have all the hair in one area, you can dispose of it by hand or use a vacuum to remove it. Squeegeeing is most effective on larger areas of the car interior, like the back seat. It makes the cleaning process a lot quicker.

Balloon

For basic loose hair in the car, a single balloon does the trick. Inflate the balloon and let its static electricity work its magic. All you have to do is run the balloon over the area with pet hair. It will attract the hair, which you can then wipe off. The method is inexpensive but doesn’t work as well when it comes to hair that is embedded into the floor mats or seats.

Duct Tape

Instead of lint rollers, use duct tape to pick up loose pet hair from upholstery. Tape is less expensive and just as effective. We recommend you use packing tape since it is less likely to leave residue due to its lighter adhesive. Just place the tape over the area and rip it off – it’s as simple as that. Just make sure to replace the strip of tape once it has lost its adhesive effects.

General Tips for Preventing Pet Hair in the Car

It is virtually impossible to prevent your dog from shedding when in the car. However, you can take some measures that will reduce pet hair or make the cleaning process easier.

  • Bathe and brush your dog before your departure. This way, you’ll get rid of most of the loose hair preemptively, and the dog won’t shed as much.
  • Use a pet seat cover. These are designed to attract hair and dirt. You put the cover over the seat and can take it off once you are back home. The covers are easy to wash, saving you a lot of time and effort.
  • Consider getting a crate or carrier to keep the dog in one place and ensure the hair it shreds doesn’t get onto the seats or floor mats. Make sure the crate or carrier is the right size so your dog fits inside of it comfortably.
